Advice

The NSW SES advises people in the following area(s) to STAY INFORMED about predicted Minor to Major flooding on the Namoi River:

  • Gunnedah and surrounds.

You should stay informed by monitoring warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and Facebook page, listening to your local ABC radio station, and checking the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises the Namoi River at Gunnedah is currently at 2.24 m and steady, below the minor flood level.

The Namoi River at Gunnedah is likely to exceed the minor flood level (7.30 m) Thursday evening. The river is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (7.60 m) early Friday morning.

The river may reach around the major flood level (7.90 m) Friday afternoon.

Further rises are possible with forecast rain.

Since early Wednesday morning, light to moderate rainfall has been observed across the Peel and Namoi River catchments.

Moderate rainfall has been observed across the Peel and Namoi River catchments since Wednesday morning. Further rainfall is forecast during Thursday.

Water storages along the Peel and and Namoi Rivers are currently full, and the catchments are saturated.

This combination of heavy rainfall, saturated catchments, and full storages may lead to flooding along the Peel and Namoi Rivers, potentially similar to the events experienced earlier this month.

Based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following areas may be impacted by dangerous floodwaters:

  • CMCA RV Park on corner of Chandos and Maitland Streets
  • Gunnedah to Kelvin road at the "Pig Hole" - 500m north of Cohens Bridge and areas to the North of the Namoi River
  • Tamworth Road at Hoss Crossing "Tommy's Swamp"
  • Properties along the Talibah Flats
  • Parts of Old Blue Vale Road
  • Parts of Ruvigne Road
  • Peppergrove Lane
  • Wean Road
  • Properties between Conadilly Street (Up to Marquis Street) and the Namoi River
  • Low lying areas along the Namoi River, Blackjack Creek and local tributaries.

What you need to do:

  • If you have a Home or Business Emergency Plan, follow it. Otherwise, have a conversation and plan for what you will do and take with you if you need to evacuate.
  • Consider the consequences of road and bridge closures and water over roads and make alternate arrangements for work, children, and travel.
  • Obey all signs about road closures and instructions from emergency services.
  • Never drive, walk, ride through, play or swim in floodwater - it is dangerous, toxic, and may void your car insurance. If it's flooded, forget it. Fines may apply.
  • Avoid storm drains and pipes, ditches, ravines, creeks, and rivers.
  • People in areas likely to be impacted by flooding should raise their assets, including waste and chemical containers above expected flood heights.
  • Share this information with family, friends, and neighbours and help others prepare where possible.
  • If you are likely to be isolated due to flooding, stock up on essential items now.
  • People working or camping along the river should monitor river heights and be prepared to relocate to higher ground.
  • Farmers should consider moving pumps and farm equipment to higher ground.
  • Companion animals and livestock should be relocated to higher ground that will not become an island.
